Short answer
Google Health writes to Apple Health only from version 5.05. Update the app, then tap Connections > Apps and services > Apple Health and allow each data type.
Google Health writes your Fitbit data to Apple Health on iPhone only from app version 5.05, and only for the data types that you allow. When data is missing, check the app version, the Apple Health connection and its permissions, and your Fitbit's last sync to Google Health.
Steps
- Update iOS. Update the Google Health app in the App Store. Google Health needs iOS 16.4 or later, and its Sync to Apple Health came in version 5.05, on 3 August 2026. Before it, the connection worked mainly from Apple Health into Google Health, and Google Health could not write your Fitbit data to Apple Health.
- Open Google Health. At the top left, tap Connections then Apps and services. Under Add connections, tap Apple Health. If Apple Health is under Connected instead, go to step 5.
Step 2
In the Google Health
- Connections
- Apps and services
- Tap Get started. On the page titled Sync Google Health with Apple Health, tap Agree.
- On the permission screen, tap Turn All Categories On, or tap the checkbox beside each data type that you want. Tap Allow. On the confirmation page, tap Done.
- Open the Health app. Tap the Profile button in the upper corner. Under Privacy, tap Apps then Google Health. Turn on each data type that you want Google Health to write.
Step 5
In the Health app
- Apps
- Google Health
- Put your Fitbit near your iPhone and open Google Health. On the Today tab, pull down on the screen, or tap Connections then Sync. This syncs your Fitbit to Google Health.
Step 6
In the Google Health
- Connections
- Sync
- In the Health app, tap Browse then Activity then Steps. Scroll down and tap Data Sources & Access: the list of apps and devices that write this data type, in order of priority. Only the sources that write steps appear in it, so Google Health is in the list once it has written steps.
Step 7
In the Health app
- Browse
- Activity

What Google Health writes to Apple Health
Google's help page lists these data types, among others, as the ones that Google Health can write to Apple Health. The categories are Google's:
| Category | Data types |
|---|---|
| Fitness | Steps, distance, floors, active calories burned, exercise, exercise routes |
| Sleep | Sleep session, sleep stages |
| Vitals | Heart rate, resting heart rate, oxygen saturation, respiratory rate |
| Body measurements | Weight, fat percentage |
| Temperature | Body temperature |
| Nutrition | Nutrition (energy and macros), water quantity |
| Mental wellbeing | Mindfulness |
Older Fitbit history
Google's help page does not say how much past data Google Health writes to Apple Health. Gadgets & Wearables reports that some users received only recent data at first, and that others received more of their history after they reconnected and left both apps open. For data that is missing in Google Health itself, see moving to Google Health.
If it still doesn't work
- No write permissions show for Apple Health
Check the version from step 1. Gadgets & Wearables reports that, for some early users, the write permissions appeared only after Google Health was fully updated or restarted. Close Google Health and open it again.
- Google Health shows "Couldn't connect with Apple Health"
Google's fix is to connect at a later time, with your iPhone connected to the internet.
- Data stopped after you reinstalled Google Health
Google says that after a reinstall you must connect Apple Health again and grant the permissions again. Do steps 2 to 4.
- Google Health shows "New data types available"
Google lists this alert as a cause of missing data: new data types need your permission first. Tap the alert, then review and grant the permissions for the new data types.
- Your newest Fitbit data is not in Google Health either
Fix the sync to Google Health first. Do step 6. In iPhone Settings then General then Background App Refresh, turn on Google Health. Turn off the modes that Google calls Battery saver mode and Bedtime mode: Google says that Fitbit data may not sync while either mode is on.
- Steps arrive, but active calories do not
Two members on r/fitbit reported this. Both said steps or workouts reached Apple Health, and one had granted active calories in both apps. Check that active calories are on for Google Health, as in step 5. The Google pages checked for this guide give no other fix.
- Overnight heart rate has gaps in Apple Health
One member on r/fitbit reported gaps of 3 hours or more between heart rate readings at night. Another member replied that they saw the same: no gap in Google Health, but a gap of a few hours in Apple Health. The sources checked for this guide give no fix.
- Health shows another source's numbers
When two sources write the same data type, Health uses the source at the top of the list from step 7. Tap Edit. Touch and hold the Change Order button next to Google Health, and drag it to the top. Tap Done.
Why this happens
Your Fitbit syncs its data over Bluetooth to your Google Health account. The Google Health app on your iPhone then writes that data to Apple Health, but only the data types that you allow. A gap at any of these points stops the data: an app older than version 5.05, the Fitbit sync, the Apple Health connection in Google Health, or a permission in either app.
Questions
Does Google Health send HRV to Apple Health?
No, according to Google's list. Heart rate variability (HRV) and skin temperature are among the data types that Google Health reads from Apple Health, but not among the data types that it writes to Apple Health.
Do I still need a third-party app to sync Fitbit to Apple Health?
Many users no longer need one for basic daily data, according to Gadgets & Wearables, now that Google Health writes to Apple Health. The site notes that paid third-party sync apps may still offer wider historical imports or more data fields.
How do I stop Google Health writing to Apple Health?
In Google Health, tap Connections > Apps and services > Apple Health, scroll and tap Disconnect. Google says new data stops syncing, but the permissions stay on in Apple Health until you turn them off there.
